Newsletter - Term 1 Number 8

Hello, Kia Ora

Most of the school was a little green looking last Thursday but they didn't look sick at all. It was great to see everyone getting into the fun on St. Patrick's day and learning a little of the history of the day. The juniors wrote their stories on shamrocks.

Swimming Carnival: Another successful event last week as the children displayed their swimming ability at our annual carnival. Several parents commented on how much they enjoyed the synchronized swimming displays in particular. Thanks to Angus and Mrs. Ngarimu for manning the sound equipment. Congratulations to all the children for their efforts and support of each other on the day. Special congratulations to the children who also achieved outside of the school pool:

Cross the River Swim: Nikau Illingworth, Kyla Ngarimu, Stephanie LeFebvre, Liam Parry, Josh Howat, Josh Colville, Hope Simpson, Angus Arthur, Mrs Ngarimu and Miss Upsall. Kyla also competed at the Peninsula Swimming Sports with Nikau, Tia and James, who went on to the Thames Valley Swim, where Nikau was second in the 11 year boys breast stroke. Well done to you all.
The school swimming cups, which are presented for effort and attitude as much as progress and ability, this year went to Isabelle Catton (Junior) and James Arthur (Senior).

Pool Fence: Thanks to Amy, Craig and Ruffy for getting our pool fence and gate up standard to meet the requirements for swimming pool fencing. The weed matting and bungy cord are short term fixes. We will be applying for funding to replace with a proper fence and maybe even a shade sail. The weed mat was chosen as the cheapest option and we will be able to re-use it later in our new garden at the school entrance.

Swimming lessons: The pool is yet to be closed for the season. Swimming will continue but obviously this will be a day to day call depending on weather and temperature.

Life Education Trust: The children enjoyed seeing Harold and Rachel on Monday. Unfortunately the weather stopped them getting here on Tuesday but Rachel obligingly rearranged their itinerary to make up the day today. Please send along a gold coin for each of your children, who have visited the mobile classroom, to help cover the cost of this excellent programme.

Japanese Student Visit: We are looking forward to hosting 13 students and their teachers on Friday morning. They are interested to see how a small country school in New Zealand works. The Japanese students are 10 to 12 year olds. They will be here from 9.30 am to 12 pm. The senior class will hopefully be able to take them along to their garden and plant some seeds or seedlings after harvesting their pumpkins. We also thought a couple of musical items would be appropriate.

Easter Funday Grocery Raffle: The fundraising committee would like all families to contribute to the grocery raffle. Non-perishable items may sent along to school at any time.

Raft Race: Also please remember to be collecting organic materials for rafts. We hope to make this popular event even bigger and better than before. We will be starting to design and construct the rafts next week.

Newsletter - Term 1 Number 7

Hello, Kia Ora

We held a successful earthquake drill last week. We had discussed with the children what to do in the event of an earthquake and most responded quickly and sensibly. Fire and earthquake drills and evacuation procedures are regularly practised at school. It would be timely to talk with children about evacuation at home and a safe meeting place, if you haven’t already done so.

Cell phones: It is school policy that if you require your child to have a cell phone at school, that it remains switched off and in their bag during the day. Being in a rural area we acknowledge that children may need a phone for emergency situations, changes to travel plans etc. We do not accept responsibility for loss or damage to any expensive items children choose to bring to school. Please inform staff if your child has a phone and discuss these conditions with your child so that they are not getting mixed messages.

A busy week this week: BOT and Fundraising meetings after school today. We also have three children in Thames today at the Thames Valley swimming sports, good luck to Tia, James and Nikau; we hope you have enjoyed your day. Thanks to the parents for transporting and supporting the swimmers.

Swimming Carnival: This will be at 1.35pm on this Friday 18th March. There will be demonstrations of the children’s water skills, synchronised swimming displays and some fun races. The Senior and Junior Swimming cups will be presented. The pool will continue to be open and the children swimming next week depending on the weather. At the moment the water is still warm thanks to the solar heating.

Life Education Trust: The LET mobile classroom will be here next Monday and Tuesday. The children all get to visit the classroom and will be covering the health unit “It’s Great To Be Me”. They will be looking at self-esteem, setting goals, building relationships etc.

Disco: A fundraiser for MBAS Year 12 student Chelsea Johnson’s Youth to Everest trip in April.

Years 1 – 4 from 4pm to 6pm.
Years 5 – 8 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Any queries to Sandi & Gary 8663589

Day Camp: Forms for day camp are available here at school. Registrations close 25th March. This is for children 6 – 13 years and teen leaders 14 – 17 years. It is being held at the Morcom’s property at Cook’s Beach this year.

Please start to collect natural materials for raft making. The miniature rafts will be sold at the Easter fun day and raced down the Waiwawa River. The owner of the winning raft and the builder receive a prize.

Our thanks go to the Bristow family and all the children who have resisted their grapes this summer. We have again received a lovely box full of ripe grapes to share.

Have a safe and happy week

School Trips

The senior students returned after their latest adventure tubing down the Waiwawa. Thanks to all those who helped with transport and supervision. I hope the bruises are not too bad. Special thanks to Gemma for her inspiration and once again sharing River Glen with us.
The junior students had a wonderful day viewing the Scarecrows, picnicking at the macadamia orchard before having a swim at Hahei. The junior room scarecrow won the popular vote for a children’s entry. Thanks for sharing your prize, the macadamias were delicious.
Senior Trip, Year 5-8 - Rotorua – Planning for this is well underway. The focus for this trip is the volcanic plateau and the obligatory adrenalin rush activities that Rotorua is so famous for. I should have a costing by next week.

Swimming

Tia Ngarimu, James Arthur and Nikau Illingworth have won places in the Peninsula East team to compete in the Thames Valley swimming meet. We wish them well for next Wednesday.
Coroglen Swimming Carnival – Every year we showcase your children and what they have learned. This year it will be on the 18th of March at 1.35.

School Website

We are launching our school website at www.coroglenschool.co.nz . We will be loading content over the next week and the newsletter will also be published weekly.
Most families have given permission for their child’s work and or images to be published. If you do not want your child to be part of our website please call and let us know by the Friday the 11th of March.
Special thanks to Seba who has been the driving force behind this website. He has spent time creating it as well as training us up so we can use it.

Life Eduction Trust

The ‘Life Education Trust’ trailer will be at school on the 21st and 22nd of March. We will be building on what we have learned in previous years and reinforcing the positive messages that are part of this worthwhile programme.

BOT Meeting

This will be held on Wednesday the 16th of March at 3.15 at school. All are welcome to attend.

Firewood

We are looking for more firewood to keep us warm in the winter. If you have a fallen tree that would be good for burning this year can you please call the school and let us know.

Fundraising Committee Meeting

There will be a fundraising committee meeting held in the school library at 3.10 on Wednesday the 16th of March.

Maths - Junior Room

As part of their maths programme the Juniors are looking at graphing and statistics. Can you please help us with our data collection?
  1. How many vehicles do your family own?
  2. What make/s are they?

Have a great week everyone.
