Westpac Helicopter Trust Fundraising

We will have a Winter Sports Challenge afternoon on Friday the 27^th of May. We will begin activities at 1pm and finish at 3pm. There will be a short break at 2pm.
The students are looking for sponsors who can donate by filling in the form attached to this newsletter. All money needs to be at school on Friday. We need to bank it at the Westpac with our school code no later than Monday Helicopter – fundraising scratchy tickets - These are available at school. Bring in your change - $2 per ticket - $50 worth of scratchies.

Sparkz Netball Team - Year 6/7

What a great week you have had with two good games! The first game on Thursday afternoon was a match against Whenuakite 7/8 team, you played so well and showed great team spirit.
The second game was on Saturday against Coromandel 7. Congratulations to you all for a well deserved draw, you played an incredible game and have really come together as a team. The final score was 7/7!

Parents there is a refereeing course on 25/5 & 11/6 10.30am after netball. It would be GREAT if you could come along to learn with us novices. It will get easier if we all help out.
 

Laughton King Parents’ seminar

Laughton King, Educational Psychologist author and visiting speaker will present a seminar for parents and interested parties on learning difficulties (including dyslexia) and co-operative parenting. This will be held at the Mercury Bay Area School library at 7pm on Thursday the 2^nd of June. There is no charge however Laughton will have his books available for purchase.

Teacher Only Day

The School will be closed on Friday the 3^rd of June. All the local schools are closed for professional learning.

Health and Safety

The Board of Trustees had a discussion regarding health and safety and will be reviewing this policy next month. During our discussions several issues arose. Fingernails should be short and clean as this minimises injuries during play. Our preference is for stud earrings. If for any reason your child has to wear a different design they must remove them during sports activities and playtime and lunchtime. They must have a container for them when not in use and a means to clean them before they are put back. I will send a copy of this policy home after it is reviewed by the BOT next month.
We have had some incidences of tummy and coughing bug. Children have been reminded to wash their hands and minimise the germ offensive.

McCain Vege Patch

Don’t forget to collect the barcodes from any McCain frozen vege pack. We can swap then for some great gardening prizes. We are currently on 200 points.

Phone Tree

I have attached the updated phone tree. Please check it and let me know if there are any changes.

Parent volunteers for work in the library

We would love to have some parents involved in our school library. This would be covering new books, shelving and some other tasks. Ring the school if you are able to help.

All the students have been working on the magic shot with the cameras. They have produced some great pictures, some of which will be published next week.

Newsletter - Term 2 Number 1

Ian Jones Visit: Yesterday we had a visit from Ian Jones the former All Black lock and now an ambassador for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. We have 21 days to fundraise for this worthy cause. All funds raised will go towards maintaining this very important resource. The students have come up with some great ideas – Rugby a thon, scratchies raffle (18+), busking, who is this baby?..... Each child will have their personal contributions recorded and the top fundraisers will have an opportunity to have a ride in the helicopter with Richie McCaw. Ian Jones and Ritchie McCaw both attended small rural schools.

We are running a “Lucky Lotto Bonus Draw Number” over the next three weeks (Numbers 1-40. For a $6 donation you will be in the draw for a return of $30 per week. The other $50 will go to the Appeal. Please call the school and send your $6 along before Friday, to reserve your favourite number. Sorry13, 16 and 23 are already taken.

Netball – Red Panthers: The girls had a great start to the season by playing 2 games. One was against MBAS & one was against Te Rerenga. Unfortunately we didn't win either game but everyone did very well. With a bit more practice we'll easily turn the score around! Special thanks to Katie B, Gracey R & Tia for also helping another team out so they played 3 games. Player of the Day went to Charlotte who got a goal and played really well and Best & Fairest went to Tia who was playing her very first game. L'shae also had a great game and played for the first time too. Big thanks to Tracey for stepping up and coaching! Practice on Thursday. Mary

Netball Team Year 6/7: Congratulations to all of you for such a fantastic start to the season! You all came and gave your best in a tough game against MB Diamonds, with the final score of 15 / 1 to the Diamonds.

Scholastic Book Club Orders: It would help us if when ordering from Scholastic you were able to send a cheque or pay by credit card.

School Phone Tree: The flood season is upon us and there may be a need to activate our Phone Tree. The phone tree is the fastest and most efficient way to communicate with the whole school community. If you do not want your number published please let me know as I am sending it home with next week’s newsletter. This will be in draft in case of any incorrect numbers in our Student Manager System. The final list will come home the following week.
