Welcome to our new students Aria Macdonald and Anna Smith who joined the junior room this week.

Congratulations to Ben Smith who came third in the 25m Freestyle Thames Valley Swimming Champs in Thames last week. Well done to Carter Hodge and Trinity McQueen who also competed in the Thames Valley Swimming Champs.

Across the river swim – It was great to have the year 7 & 8 students compete in the annual across the river swim this year. Thank you to all the parents who helped out with transport and supervision in the water.

Japanese visit - On Thursday 28th March we will be welcoming a group of Japanese students into our school to share with them, a bit of our culture, musical talents and hopefully a game of rugby.

Swimming Carnival - This will be held on Thursday 28th March beginning at 2pm. Parents and grandparents are welcome to come along and watch the children display what they have learnt so far this year.

Coroglen Charity Horse Trek – Saturday 6th April from 8am to 5pm. If you haven’t already registered you and your horse email [email protected] , phone Amy 866  3134 or you could check out the facebook page Coroglen Charity Horse Trek for more  information.

Leadfoot Festival tickets – James Arthur was stoked to be able to attend the Leadfoot Festival last Friday through the school. James got to meet Jim Travis who reached 286 mph in his restored Pumpkin Seed at Bonneville, and Jim Richards, who has seven Bathurst 1000 victories. James is pictured in a 1953 Maserati A6GCS Barchetta owned by Tony Olissoff.

Easter Holidays – Reminder the school will be closed Friday 29th March to Tuesday 2nd April. School will re-commence on Wednesday 3rd April. Have a safe and enjoyable Easter break.

End of term 1 is a few weeks away. Last day is Friday 19th April. Term 2 begins on Monday 6th May.

Fundraising 2013 –The meeting of the fundraising committee is now on Monday the 25th March at 3pm at the school.

Mercury Bay Junior Rugby we had a great turn out at the official weigh in last Tuesday, and it was awesome to see all the players keen to start playing rugby again this season. A big thank you, to all the new and returning players, and parents for making the afternoon a success. If you missed the weigh in, there will be an opportunity this Friday the 22nd of March. Bill Cooksley (Regional Development Officer) will be at the Mercury Bay Area School from 9am onwards. Milo Promotion Thanks to all those who turned up for breakfast, we had around 45 children chow down on the Milo breakfast. It was a great opportunity for players to meet their coaches on the day and also meet the new families who have moved to the area. A great day was had by all. - Amy

Annual across the river swim – This is open to Year 7 & 8 children and will be held on Monday 25th March (pp Friday 26th April). Students will cross the river using the ferry, they will then be directed to an area where they will enter the water and swim back across the estuary. The swimming event is closely supported/supervised with boats supplied by Hot Water Beach Surf Life Saving, Whitianga Coastguard, Whitianga Harbourmaster, Dive HQ, MBAS staff and parents supporting in kayaks. Low tide is at 12.28pm, the expected time when the first group will cross is around 12.50pm. As this is a water activity please complete the attached permission/transport slip.

Watchdog Greenspot Gig This Saturday enjoy a day at the Dojo, from 2-5pm. Soul Sax Plus are hosting an open mic session with Kirehe House Band and Dylan & Nur. Entry is by koha, with food and drinks available to purchase, see you there.

Coroglen Charity Horse Trek – Saturday 6th April from 8am to 5pm. Tell your family and friends about our amazing horse trek through farm and native bush. This is an enjoyable 5-6hr trek and includes a lovely country fare lunch. Cost is only $70 an adult with children 12 yrs and older riding with a parent only $30. Barry Charles visited the school last week and performed for the children playing ukulele. The children then played a few songs for Barry before joining him in a jam session. The 3D town the senior room built


Senior room pupils began work on a new maths project. They had to build a 3D town made out of paper using measurements to plan and build the houses and three, four and five sided buildings. They started by designing a net that would fold into a house or building.

Marine Biodiversity for the senior room, please make sure you have filled out and returned these forms to the school, as we need to make sure we have the  parent to child ratio covered.

Charity Trail Bike Ride – A huge thank you to all those volunteers who helped set up on Saturday, and those who were there on Sunday. It was a fantastic day for the riders and spectators. Our fundraising group raised just over $3000.

Mill Creek Bird Park – A newsletter will be sent home next week with all the details.

FREE Guided Community Snorkel Day has been postponed to this Saturday 16th March from 10am to 3pm at Gemstone Bay, Cathedral Cove. The day is a great opportunity for locals and visitors to check out the intricate caves, underwater arches and many species of fish like snapper and crayfish which can be seen on the snorkel trail at Gemstone Bay. Free hire snorkel gear and wetsuits will be available on the day for anyone 10 years and older.

Milo Promotion – Reminder this Saturday Milo is promoting Junior Rugby through a breakfast in conjunction with Mercury Bay Junior Rugby Club on Saturday 16th March, at the Mercury Bay Senior Clubrooms at Lyon Park at 9am. Afterwards will be a light run, so remember boots, mouth guards & water bottles

Hot Water beach Surf Lifesaving finals – were held on Sunday and attended by some of our students. Congratulations to Sean Smith who was the 8 year old boys Champion, Ben Smith who was second in the 10 year old boys, to Caitlyn Hodge who won ribbons and Anna Smith who was the overall Champion of the pre-schoolers.  Please enjoy Sean’s story writing about his day.

KAPOWAI  KIWI GROUP INC. NEEDS NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS
One of your local Kiwi Conservation groups started in 2002. We do predator control work over 3000h including two "Significant Natural Areas": the Parakau and the Kapowai. We work with private landowners and conservation groups to protect Kiwi, Hochstetter Frogs, Fern Birds and all native flora and fauna. Every winter. volunteers do a Kiwi Call Count Listening Survey. In order to maintain our Inc. Society status/funding, we need new committee members and a chairperson. The work we do is invaluable and does not require a big time commitment. If you have any inquiries or interest, please ring Jenny 866 3919 or Murray 866 3873.

Charity Trail Ride - This Sunday 10th March at Landcorp Farms on Purangi Rd. Be great to see you there!

Paid Union Meeting next Wednesday 13th March at 1.30pm. The school will be open for those children who are unable to be picked up at 12.30pm. The school bus will leave school at 1.30pm. 


Marine Biodiversity - Reminder to students and parents who own their own snorkel, mask & flippers to bring them along for our class pool session next Monday 11th March. While snorkelling gear will be provided, it is an advantage if you have your own.

Mill Creek Bird Park trip is planned for the junior room on Wednesday 27th March. If you have not returned your blanket permission slip yet, please send this back, as it will cover this trip. Transport is required, please see the transport slip at the end of this newsletter. We will be leaving the school at 9.30am and returning after lunch.

Books change lives - March is NZ Book Month, and Caltex and their initiative "Caltex Energy for Learning" are providing a $5 book voucher to every student in teh country to encourage the joy of reading and the power of literacy. These vouchers can be redeemed from Paper Plus when you purchase any book priced $10 or more.

School Trustee Elections 2013 - is coming up again. Becoming a school trustee could be one of the most rewarding roles you have. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences, who believe in making a positive difference to our children's learning. Step forward and nominate yourself or someone you know by filling out a nomination form available from your school.

Milo Promotion - Milo this year is PROMOTING Junior Rugby once again through a breakfast, and Mercury Bay Junior Rugby Club is involved. This will take place at The Mercury Bay Senior Clubrooms at Lyon Park, on Saturday 16th March 2013, at 9am. Afterwards we will be having a light run, so boots, mouth guards and water bottles, please. So come along and have a free breakfast on Milo. Amy Hodge

The Mercury Bay Junior Rugby Club 2013 Official Weigh In - Tuesday, 12th March 2013 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm at the Mercury Bay Junior Rugby Clubrooms. You will be weighed in by the Thames Valley Regional Development Officer, Bill Cooksley. If you have not played rugby before, on the night you will be expected to fill in a 2013 Registration Form and we will need a copy of your Birth Certificate.  Please give this to Teremoana Johansen (Secretary).  Fees will need to be paid on the night.  Please put into envelope of the amount and the childs name and we will write out a receipt for you. Rippa - $15.00 per person. 9th, 8th, 7th, 6th, and 5th - $35.00 per person. Family Concession - $55.00 per family.

Scarecrows re homed –  The whole school escorted their the heavenly inspired scarecrows to the  Macadamia Orchard last Thursday and settled their creations into their new homes before enjoying a picnic lunch under the walnut tree.
don't forget to visit the Macadamia Orchard on Lees Rd this weekend and enjoy the sculptures and most importantly vote for your favourite scarecrow.
