Coroglen School celebrates 117 years open

Students at Coroglen School celebrated 117 years of schooling in Coroglen with a fun dress up day and sausage sizzle put on by the lovely ladies in our fundraising committee.

Coroglen School revisits games played over 100 years ago

In celebration of Coroglen School's 117th Birthday on Monday 20 May 2103, the senior room researched the games played by children at the school over 100 years ago.
In the afternoon the entire school participated in a fun day playing the sports children played when the school first opened.
Games included Annie Over, where two teams line up opposite each other with a barrier in between them. When Annie is called out, a person throws the ball to the other team. If they don't catch it they throw it back to someone on the other team.
When some one catches it, the teams switch sides really fast, and the person with the ball tries to hit someone on the other team so they have to swap teams. The game continues until one team is out.

Another game was Red Rover. You need two teams which take turns calling out "Red Rover, Red Rover, let (childs name) come over!" That child leaves their team's line, runs as fast as they can toward the other line, and tires to break through the held hands. If they break through they get to take someone back to their team. If they don't, they join the new team. When a team only has one person left, that person tries to break through the other team. If they don't, then their team loses. If they do, they gain a player and play continues.

You can't forget :Rolling the Hoop". To win the race you need to spin it to the end without stopping or letting the hoop fall.

Team handball was another popular game played by children over 100 years ago.

Hello / Kia Ora

Welcome to our 5 year olds Mason Campbell and Jessica Jordan, who have joined the junior room.

Keeping Ourselves SafeWe have been learning about Keeping Ourselves Safe. We talked about touches we like, don't like and can be confusing. We all liked having a back rub with Constable Maryanne.

BOT School Elections – Nominations close Thursday 16th May at 12 noon.

NZ Post Children’s Book Awards – School aged children and young adults are invited to have their say by voting for their favourite book amongst the finalists. All valid votes received online and by voting card put both the child and their nominated school into the prize draw to win ($500 booksellers tokens for the student, $500 booksellers tokens for the school). A copy of all the Book Awards Finalists books are available at the school library.

Whitianga Community Services Trust – Don’t forget about our resource centre in Whitianga. They offer a range of services including book exchange, budgeting NZFFBS, education and training/workshops, family well-being support, food bank, individual and family counseling, supervised contact provider, volunteer centre and youth in development to name a few. They are situated at 2 Cook Drive in Whitianga.

A BIG thank you to Sam Torowai , who noticed some mold growing around the childrens’ drinking fountain and brought her water blaster in yesterday to clean this off. Thanks Sam, its parents like you who make a difference in our small school!

Kind regards
Penny and the team.

Keeping Ourselves Safe – We have started our focus on Keeping Ourselves Safe. Local police education officer, Maryann Kerr will be here next Monday morning and is happy to answer any questions by parents or caregivers.

School Trustee Elections– Our school is governed by a democratically elected group of people called the Board of Trustees. These trustees make important decisions about our school’s strategic direction, student achievement outcomes, resources, staffing and much more.
Becoming a school trustee could be one of the most rewarding roles you have. We are looking for people with a range of skills and experiences, who believe in making a positive difference to our children's learning. If you are interested in standing for election or nominating someone else, please contact the school and request a nomination form if you did not receive one at the end of last term. The electoral roll can be viewed at the school office. Nominations close at noon on Thursday 16 May.

School Photos - Monday 20 May. The pre-paid envelopes will come home next week and will need to be returned by Friday 17 May.

School's Birthday - Coroglen School is turning 117 on the 20th May. We are having a fancy dress day and an afternoon of fun and laughter. After lunch the students will be competing in the Coroglen school Birthday Tabloid Sports. Sausages are available for sale on the day for $2.

Whitianga Garage Sale - We are seeking expressions of support for a Coroglen school garage sale depot in town for the Queen's Birthday event. Do you have any good used treasures that could be sold to raise funds for the School. We have the location and things would need to be delivered to 8 Cobham Lane of the day before the sale. Please complete the slip attached and indicate what sort of things you would like to donate (I need to know how much space to create in my garage).

Scooters - Scooters have become popular again and the children are having a wonderful time on a circut around the court. Due to the number of skaters, all children that want to skate need to have their own helmet from tomorrow. All skaters must also have sturdy shoes. These should not be their best shoes as one will end up being worn through by the braking action.

Mother's Day - Happy Mother's Day to all the hard working mums out there.

Kind regards
Penny and the team.
