Coroglen School continue traditional annual planting at Hot Water Beach

Coroglen School students continue their traditional annual planting at Hot Water Beach. The school has been planting at the beach for 12 years in conjunction with the Hot Water Beach Reserve Management Group and Smart Environmental. Over the years they have filled the land between the road and the beach as you enter Hot Water Beach. Last Thursday they joined parents and helpers to plant along the new car park and new track leading to the hot pools. They planted out 400 plants including flax and cabbage trees as well as some pohutakawa and puri trees the school had received in the paper for trees scheme, but decided these trees were too big for the school grounds.

Howard Saunders from Smart Environmental talks about Matariki and
the ledgend "eyes of god" and how we celebrate Matariki.

Lunch time fun!

It's great to see so many happy faces enjoying their lunch break. The weather was warm and dry for a winters day, and the children took the opportunity to soak up the sun when it came out.
The girls on the climbing bars,

and both boys and girls on the back field having a friendly game of touch.

In training for Winter Sports

We have begun training for our Winter Sports. Children need to bring suitable footwear to school every day, as they are required for some of the sports we are practicing.
The Winter Sports are for our Years 4-8 and are on Wednesday 3rd July at Whenuakite School. There will be 18 teams playing 5-7 aside games in netball, ripper rugby, football (soccer), uni-hockey, and inside games. From 10am to 2pm there will be rounds of about 26 minutes each and each team will play five very competitive games against equally matched teams (mainly Year 4, 5 & 6, and 7 & 8). The competition will be intense because points are collected after each game. There are overall winners in each section, but never by much.
It does not matter whether the teams come from a big school or small
school, have boys or girls, or play club sports or not. Any team can win on the day. Team work is the secret weapon plus a bit of luck.

If there are any keen parents willing to come along to school and help coach our children in these sports, please let the school know. A big thanks to Kerrie Strang who has been coming on a Wednesday to train the children in Netball. The children really enjoy these afternoons.

The children enjoy playing uni-hockey in their morning break today.

Hello / Kia Ora

Gecko – Last week we had a visit by Herpetological Society member Mr. Doug Ashby and his geckos. Most of the children were brave enough to handle these amazing creatures.  If you spot the Coromandel striped gecko, as pictured, can you please take a photo and note when and where you spotted them, and email the information to Doug at [email protected]

Matariki – is the Maori name of the Pleiades star cluster, otherwise known as the Seven Sisters. The rise of the stars marks the start of winter and the traditional Maori New Year. To celebrate this occasion the children engaged in a kite flying afternoon as a symbol of lifting their vision skywards.

Planting – We also planted the junior gardens with garlic, spinach and parsley. The year 8s also got to plant a tree each, down the drive.

Relief teacher – There will be a very experienced reliever, Miss Dianne Gaenge in the school over the next few weeks while I am away dealing with a minor medical matter.  Jean Saunders will be acting principal in my absence.

Tree Planting – with the Hot Water Beach Tree Committee will be next Thursday 20th June. This is a whole school event. We will need people to assist with supervision and transport, please complete and return the form at the bottom of the newsletter.

BOT Meeting – The meeting of the new board will be on Monday the 17th of June at 3.15 pm.

Kind regards
Penny and the Team.

Hello / Kia Ora
Garage Sale – Thank you for your donations and baking for the Coroglen School garage sale held last weekend in town. The fundraising committee raised $376.40.

Senior Olive Trip – The senior room children enjoyed picking olives at Ian and Jan Hollister’s Olive Grove last week. They then took them to Thames to be pressed into olive oil by Stratt Peters. Thank you to all the parents who helped out with transport and supervision. Watch this space to see what we do with the olive oil.

Teachers only day - This was very worthwhile for the teachers. Our main focus was writing our local maths curriculum document. We also looked at a consequences of behaviour plan. Thank you for your support in enabling us to have this day for staff development together. It is great to be able to have quality time together and focus on completing some important jobs that need to be done.
Life Education Trust – Visited us yesterday and today. Your children will come home with things to discuss.

Kind regards
Penny and the Team.
