Hello / Kia Ora

Pet Day – The long range weather forecast is looking good for this Saturday so we hope to see everyone there. Children will need to be at the school by 9.30am to help set up. Parents please drop off your baking on Saturday morning to the cake stall.

This year we are having a best dressed pet/owner award and best trick competition, so get thinking about how you will dress yourself/pet up and what tricks they can perform.

Zero Waste – Ken Carpenter from Zero Waste visited the school on Monday to talk about reducing your rubbish. The junior room discussed having litter less lunch boxes by avoiding once’s and finding packaging that can be used again and again.
In the senior room Ken talked about when buying a product with lots of packaging, he only takes the product and leaves the packaging at the shop for them to reuse. He also discussed the cost of landfills to dispose of the rubbish we make.

Fonterra Milk – Our school will start giving the children chilled UHT  milk from Fonterra at the start of next term, Monday to Thursday. Kelly from Fonterra came last week and taught the children how to fold the empty milk cartons to be recycled.

Yummy Sticker Sheets – If you have any yummy sticker sheets at home, please return them to school as these will need to be sent off shortly. Please find new sticker sheets attached to the newsletter.

Corokids Olive Board – The senior room have finished a lovely display to explain to potential buyers the process they have followed to make their olive oil and Lemon grass castile soap. Pictured are Hannah Parry and Alana Howat who were instrumental in the design of the Olive Board.

Hot Water Beach Sand Dune Planting – Thank you to everyone who is providing transport on Thursday. We will be leaving the school soon after 9am to get back for morning tea at 10.30am. Unless it is torrential rain we will still be going ahead with the planting. In the case of light showers please remember to bring your raincoats and gumboots.

Tsunami Warning - This Friday at 12 noon a 2 minute continuous siren will signal a practice tsunami warning.

End of Term 3 – Friday 27th September is the last day of term 3. School will re-commence on Monday 14th October 2013. Have a safe and adventurous holiday.

This week we farewell Libby Reilly. Libby has been doing her student teacher practicum with us this term and we have really enjoyed having her at the school. The junior room will miss Libby but send their best wishes in her future teaching career.

I will be away at the Rural Schools Principals’ Conference in Napier this week getting lots of good practical ideas for our school and will be back for Pet Day on Saturday.

Daylight Savings - Remember to put your clocks forward one hour on
Sunday 29th September.

Enjoy your week
Penny and the team.

Bridge Holdup Thank you to our bandits Jessie, Gemma, Kerrie, Kale and Kylie who were busy holding up visitors to our area at the Coroglen bridge last Friday. Their efforts raise a total of $2,403.70. This is a mammoth amount raised in a few hours. Special thanks also go to Lloyd for helping set up, Sam for the lovely refreshments and Trevor Barclay who assisted counting the money.

Every year we ask each family to provide a cake or biscuits for the Cake Stall. Please drop these off  on Saturday to the Cake Stall by 10am.

The senior room will have the Coroglen School Olive Oil for sale for $16. This is made from the olives they picked and had pressed in Thames last term. They also learned about adding value to an item and produced pure olive oil lemongrass bars of soap. These are 100% natural handmade soaps full of wonderful benefits for your skin and are selling for $6 each, or you can buy the oil and soap for only $20.

The junior room have also been busy producing packets of sunflower seeds with their artwork on the packet. If you would like to buy your child/s artwork packet of sunflower seeds please send $5 to the school before pet day otherwise it could be sold on the day to someone else.

School Fundraiser – The children have been very busy creating some masterpieces for calendars and cards. This is a fundraiser for the school, and will make lovely Christmas gifts for family members. Please see attached form. The price for a calendar is $10, a pack of 8 cards is $12, and a diary is $15. There is an option available for parents to upload a photo of your child/ren and have printed as a calendar, cards or diary. If you are interested in this option, please see Mrs Saunders who will explain the procedure. As we will be selling card sets at Pet Day, we would like to place our order by the end of the week, so please get your orders in by Friday.

Daffodil Day. To celebrate Daffodil Day, we all dressed up in colours of the daffodil, and replicated a human daffodil.

Parachute Fun – Our junior class had fun with Briar last week when she brought in a colourful parachute. The junior room got to lift it, and watch how it filled up the room.

Unfortunately we do not have any photos of the children at the Peninsula Cross Country last week as we have not received any.

Mercury Bay Junior Rugby prize giving was held last Friday to acknowledge our children’s achievements in rugby over the 2013 season. Thank you to all the parents who have returned your pet day slips. This gives us an idea of the man power we will have available on the day.

Pets – We have an interesting range of pets coming to pet day especially from the junior room. We are a bit light on senior pets this year.

Mercury Bay Junior Rugby 5th Grade Photos  - An informal team photo under the goal post, is available for the 5th grade rugby team. These will be presented to the children at prize giving on Friday. Nits – We still have a problem with nits. Please check your child/ren to make sure they do not have any. If they do, please treat them and keep your child/ren at home until they have gone.

Daffodil Day – Friday 30 August. Could children please bring a gold coin donation for Daffodil Day this Friday. Students have been asked to wear a certain colour on Friday in order to create a human daffodil. They may need to wear yellow or green. A photo will be taken, and used to make a card to be presented with the money collected to the Mercury Bay Cancer Support Group on behalf of Coroglen School. Your support in this is greatly appreciated.

Volleyball tournament – for the year 7 and 8s will be held at Mercury Bay on Wednesday 18th September. More information on this to come.

HomeworkPlease remember that all Coroglen School students have homework every week night. The junior students have reading and some are also doing weekly spelling words. These words come from their writing.
The senior students have weekly maths sheets. They all have spelling words to learn which come from their writing. We talk about techniques for learning words – finding smaller words hiding inside a word, what word sounds/starts the same and saying the words phonetically which is often an amusing exercise - a case in point people - people. Also we have the routine for learning words – Look – Say – Cover – Write – Check J

Thames Valley Cross Country
This was held today at the Waterways.
We had seven runners and all finished their races. It comes hard on the heels of some injuries and illness and we were proud of the runners who all did their very best on the day. There will be some tired muscles tonight. Congratulations. Photos to follow next week.

Enjoy your week
