Hello / Kia Ora

www.inmyday.org.nz
My 14 year old son spends hours online or texting every day. He has no real interest in anything else. Is this normal?
……………………………………………………………
“In My Day” is a site for parents and caregivers. It helps you understand how young people communicate today. It gives you guidance on how to limit their online use and helps them understand how to keep safe online.

Children need a good night’s sleep
We have noticed some children are tired in class, please be aware that children are very active during the day and need to get a good night’s sleep to re-energise their bodies for the following day. This does affect their learning if they can’t concentrate properly during class.

Daffodil Day
Daffodil Day is this Friday. We support this annual appeal to raise money for cancer research. Children are asked to bring along a gold coin donation. We are making a person size daffodil out of collage and we are looking for pages out of magazines that have the colours yellow, orange and green. We would appreciate it if you could send these pages along to school by Friday.

Kauri Dieback
There is a meeting at Whitianga Town Hall, 2pm-5pm on Sunday 31st August. For more information check out www.kauridieback.co.nz

Volleyball
We are fortunate to have Shirley Hatwell teaching the children volleyball skills in preparation for the Volleyball tournament on Friday 19th September. Shirley has represented New Zealand playing Volleyball at the Olympics and we hope the children take this opportunity to learn as much as they can from her.

Basketball
Any year 7 or 8 student who would like to play basketball next term, please give Susan a call on 866 3364.

Head Lice
We have some incidents of head lice in the school. Please be proactive and check heads often and treat when necessary so we can break the cycle. Huge thanks to the families who are on top of this problem.
Kind regards

www.netbasics.org.nz
Our home computer is constantly in use. From online banking and shopping, to homework, music downloads and social networking….we do everything on it. How do we keep it secure, and our information safe?
……………………………………………………………
NetBasics is an entertaining way for the whole family to learn more about computer security. Meet the Jones family and see the common ‘safety’ mistakes they make online in emails, banking, shopping and networking. NetBasics shows where the pitfalls are and gives you easy ways of staying safe online.

Pet Day
Pet Day is only 8 weeks away. Calving and lambing is coming to an end so if you haven’t already, now is the time to approach farmers about getting a calf or lamb as you need to look after it for at least six weeks prior to pet day. Or you can start a diary on the pet you already have.

When Chocolate Fish are Flying
When Chocolate Fish are Flying is a book for people of all ages written by local author Jan Hill. It is a mixture of magic, mischief and downright bad behaviour intended to give readers and listeners a smile before bedtime. The school have a few of these gorgeous books for sale at $37 each. A generous donation will be received from each book sold. They are hard covered and will make a lovely gift for children aged 1 to 89 years….

Yummy Sticker Promotion
Our school has been collecting yummy stickers from Yummy apples all year. There is a new Sticker collection Sheet attached if you have filled up your last one. We have another seven weeks of collecting before we need to send the sheets in, so get your yummy apples, and don’t forget to save the stickers on them so we can exchange them for sports gear.

Jump Rope
Once again Coroglen School students are jumping rope for heart towards the end of the term. Since 1985 the programme has helped 2.4 million children hop, skip and jump their way to heart healthy bodies.

Agri Sea

It provides a boost and increases resistance and recovery during times of metabolic stress.

Stationery Accounts
Please find attached your stationery accounts for August. These can be paid in instalments if your account is quite high.

Cross Country
We had a fantastic day yesterday at Whenuakite with the cross country. All the children did their best so they are all winners, and winners are grinners.
Coroglen place-getters for each age group who are entitled to go to the Peninsula Run are Leon & Tyrese Melde, Riley-Jean Macdonald, Sashka Highway, Awa Illingworth (8 years and under), Jerome Melde (10 years),  Ben Smith, Antonio Rupeti-Anderson, Khan Simpson-Hibbert (12+ years). A special mention must go to Oliver Highway who came first in his race. However because he is only six years old, is too young to participate in the Peninsula Run. We have some great runners in our school. Well done to everyone who participated!

Awa, Riley-Jean and Sasha were pictured sitting in the Friendship Seat at morning tea on Tuesday.

Storing water
The school has received a media release regarding the use of bleach in your water. Living in a rural community we are aware some of you may use bleach in your water tanks as advised by Council. That should still be done. However, with new products coming onto the market not all bleaches are safe to use in drinking water.
It is not safe to use bleaches that contain added scent or perfume, surfactants or other additives – they can make you sick. Surfactants will make the water foam or bubble when it is shaken or mixed. If the product’s label is not clear about what has been added to the bleach, do not use the product for the safe storage of water.

Cross Country
We are having a cross country practice for the years 4-8 at Whenuakite School on Friday 8th August at 9am. We will need transport to and from Whenuakite School and will be leaving school at 8.45am for running practice at 9am. The course will not officially be marked up until the day of the race. This should take no more than half an hour and we plan to be back to school by 10am so the manual kids can catch the bus as normal.

Lock down practice
Due to Monday’s events we practiced lock down procedures today where all our children were moved into the hallway being the safest area in the school.

BOT meeting
Our next board of trustees meeting is Thursday 14th August. If you are interesting in joining the board, please come along. All are welcome.

Healthy Breakfasts
Briar Ward from Project Energize recently discussed healthy breakfast options with the junior class. Weet-bix, porridge, eggs and whole grain toast are the healthiest and cheapest options for every day with less sugar and fat and more fibre. The reason we have breakfast is to enhance brain function, focus and staying power.

Multiplication in the junior room

Repeated addition in other words multiplication eg. 2+2+2=6, and 3 x 2=6.
This is the juniors singing the multiplication song, using their fingers as the multiplication sign.

3D water cycles in the senior room
The senior class is following up their recent unit study on Water Conservation by making a 3-dimension water cycle.

Caitlyn, Sashka and Riely-Jean work on their 3-dimension water cycle project.

School break in update
A meeting was held at the school yesterday regarding the break in. The BOT will be discussing the issue and looking at formulating a policy which formalizes this process as discussed with Constable Catherine Sell, who was very complimentary about the steps we have taken so far.
Thanks to the parents involved who have been supportive.

The 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The responsibility and costs of dealing with the growing mountain of packaging waste (such as single use containers) is currently falling onto taxpayers, councils and communities.  The waste from packaging accounts for about one eighth of the rubbish sent to landfills. Each New Zealander throws away 83 kilograms of used packaging every year.
Last Thursday Colleen Brink from Zero Waste New Zealand visited our school to discuss ways to recycle our waste.  The focus in the junior room was educating today for a sustainable tomorrow.  They discussed tips for reducing waste – 1. Use it again.  2. Borrow, hire or share.  3. Sell or donate it.  This is reinforced in the children’s work books.  Colleen also talked about how metals are really important to recycle because it reduces the need to do further mining of things like bauxite and iron ore.  The children have also been making things out of rubbish like bird feeders, boats and a letter box for the classroom etc.

The senior room completed a unit on water conservation studying the water cycle like storm water drains, waste water drains and what happens in treatment plants. Each child in the senior room took a bag home to find out how much water they used in their showers.  They are making a model of the water system and gaining an awareness of how much water they use.

What are we learning about?
There will be information in your child’s homework book about our current studies.  Please check their homework book daily to keep informed about what we are focusing on at school.

Commonwealth Home Play Challenge
We are encouraging the children to participate in the Commonwealth Home Play Challenge which is about nutrition and exercise. Those who participate will not only learn beneficial lifetime habits by taking responsibility for their own well being but there is also a special day in store for those who do participate.
The seniors are in week two with the focus of having a packet free lunch every day this week. It is good to see the children are making an effort to achieve this. The junior’s goal is to take a walk with their whanau and count as many trees as they can as well as aiming to have one vegetable and one fruit in their school lunch box this week.

School Holiday Break In

Dear Parents,
There was an incident in the holidays where a number of boys entered the school buildings and took some items of food and drink.  We the board and the teachers are investigating this thoroughly and a member of the community police is also involved.

Our hope is to provide a strong lesson for the boys' involved, increased awareness of security at the school, and a sense of closure for the school community. We hope to have this resolved so we can let you know in the next newsletter.

Regards
Seba Illingworth

Cross Country
We are training every day.  Please send your children to school with appropriate training gear. The cross country run is on Tuesday 12th August at Whenuakite School. We will be assembling at Whenuakite School at 11am.  More information will be sent out next week.

Volleyball
Briar Ward from Sport Energize took the junior room children for Volleyball training today.  They started with learning to keep a balloon in the air.

School Community Officer
We met with Constable Catherine Sell, our new School Community Officer today to report the school holiday break in, and discuss with her the process we are taking.  She was happy with the progress made so far with the schools restorative justice programme.  We will have more information next week.

Bus Rules
A special newsletter went out yesterday regarding the bus rules.  School policy is your child/ren must have consent if they are going somewhere different to normal. If you did not receive this newsletter and your children catch the bus, please let us know, and we will send one home.
