Newsletter, Term 1, No 7

Hello / Kia Ora

Phone Tree Messages
This was put into action on Sunday afternoon and it has come to our attention that the message did not get through to some people. If you are unable to reach the person directly below you on the list, please ring the person under them as stated on the bottom of the phone tree list.
Penny is implementing a cell phone system where she will send a txt to parents with the message. We are looking to do a trial run this Thursday, and ask that you reply with your name so we can see if everyone gets the message this way.

St Patricks’ Day
Yesterday the school was looking a little green – in celebration of St Patricks’ Day.

BOT Meeting
The next Board of Trustee meeting is on Tuesday 24th March at 3.15pm in the staff room. All are welcome.

Parent Teacher Meetings
We have attached a schedule with available interview times. If you have not already booked an interview time, please contact the school on 866 3850.

Stationery Accounts
Please find attached your stationery accounts. Unfortunately our school is not funded to provide stationery supplies for your children. We do however purchase these in bulk so we can pass on the savings to you. We sell these items at the same price we pay for them. This does not work when some families do not pay their stationery accounts leaving our stationery budget in a deficit. We would like to thank those families who pay their stationery accounts regularly. families who have large stationery accounts and who have not made any attempt to reduce them will need to provide stationery for their children.
We have decided to add the lawns fee to the stationery account each term – for one child this is $7.50 per term. For two or more children this is $15 per term.  These will be added to your next stationery account.

Kauri Dieback
Alison Smith from Kauri Dieback visited our school on Tuesday to talk to the children about Kauri Dieback on the Coromandel and what we can do to further prevent the spread of this disease. The children researched well known local kauri trees and discussed how we can protect our Kauri tree which was planted at the schools Centennial. Pictured are the children  measuring the circumference of the 2nd largest Kauri tree (found growing up Mill Creek Rd) which was 22.86m and the diameter 7.2m.

The senior class will be visiting and performing at Continuing Care next Wednesday 25th March. We need to be there by 11am, so will be leaving the school by 10.30am. This has become a highlight for some of the residents at Continuing Care who look forward to seeing the children each year.

The Great Whio Adventure Competition
With an estimated population of less than 2,500 birds, whio are rarer than kiwi and that’s why DOC would like your help to raise awareness of this very important species.
March is ‘Whio Awareness Month’ and Genesis Energy and DOC are working together on the ‘Whio Forever’ programme which aims to increase the numbers of whio in our rivers. You can enter the Great Whio Adventure Colouring Competition and win an amazing five day family holiday where you could met a real whio in the wild. Entry forms are attached.

Newsletter Term 1, No 6

Hello / Kia Ora

Thank you to the Coroglen Tavern for their kind donation of $562 from the muffin sales last year, not $362 as reported in last week’s newsletter

Parent Teacher Meetings
A reminder that these meetings are during the last two weeks of this term. If you have not already returned the slip, please do so this week. Your booked time will be confirmed shortly.

Coroglen Charity Horse Trek
The Coroglen horse trek is not far off now. It is on Saturday 28th March, at the Macdonald’s beautiful farm on Mill Creek Road. We know how busy everyone is, but we would love help to provide lunch for the riders. The less we have to buy, the more profit there is for the school. Can you make your favourite salad, some muffins, a quiche, a cake or donate extra fruit from your trees? If you have a spare roast that you don’t mind cooking or have some extra smoked fish, it would really be appreciated. We have had such wonderful feedback on our lunch each year, so let’s all do a little bit to provide another fantastic feast. If you would like to join us, and enjoy this wonderful day on the farm, you are most welcome.
Please call me on 866 3134 and let me know how you can help. Thanks heaps.  Amy

Trail Ride – Once again thanks to those who helped with this event. We will let you know how much was raised in due course.

Reading Recovery
Some of you may have noticed that Jean Saunders is doing our Reading Recovery Programme this year. This has allowed us to have two children at Coroglen School on the programme which is very advantageous to us with our growing junior role. This is a shared position with Whenuakite School who also get help with two youngsters on the programme.

Coroglen School Swimming Carnival
This has been postponed to Monday 23rd March from 1.30pm. All parents are welcome to come along. We will also be presenting the swimming cups and the children will be displaying the skills they have been practicing in the pool this year.

Mercury Bay Day Camp
If you haven’t already registered your child, the holiday camp is now fully booked.

Garden
Our school gardens urgently need attention! We are holding a working bee to get the grounds
presentable again. Some people have indicated that after school would be more suitable than a weekend day. Please indicate which day suits you to spend an hour helping to beautify the grounds. Please bring your own gardening tools

Yummy Stickers
We sent out Yummy Sticker Sheets at the beginning of the term, and would like to remind parents that the Yummy fruit is now hitting the supermarket shelves and to remember to save the stickers J

Project Energize
Briar Ward visited our school on Monday to talk to the children about the sugar content in drinks. Both children and teachers were amazed at the high levels of sugar in our drinks. She will be following this up with a Healthy Eating session on Thursday 26th March getting the children to make healthy fruit smoothies. Parents will be asked to supply some items. More info will come home next week.

Continuing Care Visit
The senior class will be visiting and performing at Continuing Care on Wednesday 25th March. More information and transport requests will come home next week. This is a most worthwhile excursion.

Newsletter, Term 1, Wk 5

Hello / Kia Ora

Thank you to Coroglen Tavern
Last week we received an awesome donation from Coroglen Tavern for $362. Last year Michelle offered to donate $1 from each muffin sale to our school, so thank you to all the parents who munched their way through 362 muffins throughout the year. Coroglen Tavern is once again offering the same deal this year, so please support our local tavern by getting a group together and calling in for a great coffee and delicious muffin.

The Thames Valley Swimming Sports will be held on Wednesday 11th March at the Thames Memorial Pool starting at 9.30am. Warm up is at 9am. All the first and second place getters have qualified for this event, we are waiting to see if spaces become available for the third place getters. Sue Barakat is the team manager for our cluster at the Thames Valley Swimming Sports.

Parent Teacher Meetings
During the last two week of this term we are planning to have parent teacher meetings. Your child is welcome to attend these meetings. Because both rooms have more than one teacher, there is some difficulty in time tabling the parent teacher meetings, so with that in mind we are looking at having interviews over several days. Please indicate which days of the week work best for you, and your preference – either straight after school, or up to 4.30pm. We would like to talk about their strengths, interests, areas of need and goal expectations. If we do not hear from you, we will assign you a time.
Coroglen School Swimming Carnival
A reminder our annual swimming carnival is on Thursday 20th March. All parents are welcome to come along. We will also be presenting the swimming cups and the children will be displaying the skills they have been practicing in the pool this year.

Charity Trail Bike Ride Fundraiser
Thank you to our wonderful parent, teacher and community volunteers who turned up on Sunday to help make the day run smoothly. We have been getting some fantastic feedback from the community about the great day they had. Thank you also to the fundraising committee and Craig and Taina who put a lot of time into the planning of this event

Healtheries Competition
Get involved! Help us to win $10,000 in sports gear for our school, delivered by Dan Carter, plus have a chance to win a $1,000 prize pack for yourself! Just buy any two Healtheries Supplements, Teas or Kidscare snacks from Countdown supermarkets during March and swipe your Onecard – the more times you buy, the greater your chances of winning!

Yesterday one of our children fell off her skateboard and landed on her arm. Early reports are that Bianca’s arm is dislocated – not broken and she should be back on deck soon. We are all thinking of you Bianca.

Phone Tree
We have attached the new phone tree. Please check your contact numbers and let us know if there are any further changes.

Mercury Bay Day Camp
This is for 6-13 year olds, at Cook’s Beach, and will be in the first week of the school holidays, immediately after Easter: Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th and Friday 10th April. There is a limit on the numbers so please register quickly! Forms are attached to the newsletter for those eligible children.

Sushi Orders
Next week Sushi lunches will be back on Tuesdays, until further notice. Please have your orders in by Fridays with the correct change in envelopes. The choices are Salmon, Tuna, Chicken and Vegetarian. All at $5 for a full roll. Cheers Sam =)

Continuing Care Visit
