Newsletter, Term 3, Wk 2

Hello / Kia Ora

Correction
Correction to last week’s newsletter – The Bay’s Best 2015 auditions are at the Mercury Bay Area School this Saturday. Please meet outside the school office by the flag pole at 1.45pm to tune up and get organised. If you cannot make the audition, please let Jenny or Justine know.

Cross Country
The annual school Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 11th August at Whenuakite School.
The Thames Valley Cross Country will be held in Whitianga on Wednesday 16th August for those children who qualify.

We will walk the courses first at 11am, and then the racing begins. Parents are welcome to come and support the children. Racing starts around 11.30am and finishes around 1pm.

We are training every day for this, so children will need clothing and suitable footwear for running games and training.

As we will be requiring transport to Whenuakite School, a transport slip will be in next week’s newsletter to be completed and returned.

Our Place Our Stories
Continuing with our integrated unit study on Our Place Our Stories the children have been working in groups on various activities involving different types of media.

Yui and Myah are working on their Maori Calendars. They are putting the different moon phases in then will record when it is good to go eeling, fishing and to plant seedlings.

Valo has been learning how to use google earth to look at Our Place. He is pointing out where he lives.

Moana is using a software programme called puppet pal, to create a puppet from her face to use in a play about a Coroglen School pupil.

Yesterday we all braved the weather and walked some of the heritage trail when the weather allowed. The museum was fabulous and we highly recommend that families go and have a look regularly. The children enjoyed getting hands on in the classroom exhibition.

Head Lice outbreak
There has been a small outbreak of nits in the school. Please check your child's hair. If you find nits present, please keep your child home until they have been treated.

Petition for safer roads in Coroglen
We are asking for a slow speed zone of 50-70km instead a dangerous 100km open road. Double yellow lines stopping passing on the main road. Children crossing signage and repositioning of bridge sign causing less confusion.
Parents wanting to sign this petition for safer roads in Coroglen can come in and sign it in our staff room.

Coroglen Playgroup
Currently there isn’t anybody running Coroglen Playgroup. Unfortunately if nobody wants to take over running the playgroup, it will officially close on August 19th. All remaining Ministry funding and all equipment and supplies ever purchased with Ministry funding have to be returned. If you don’t want to see Coroglen Playgroup come to an end and would like to get involved, please contact Hazel 021 924 841.

Stationery Accounts
Stationery accounts are attached. Your prompt payment would be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful week

Term 3

The Bay’s Best 2015
We are seeking parent interest in supporting your children who are keen to audition for The Bay’s Best 2015. Auditions and the performance date are on Saturdays, so we will require parents to make sure children are at the Town Hall on time. Justine is trying to get our audition for later on in the afternoon as some children have sport on Saturday mornings. Please talk to your children, and if they are keen fill in the slip at the end of this newsletter.

You may have heard that we are losing our multi-talented teacher aide – Justine Williams next Thursday. Justine is not leaving completely as she has agreed to still be involved with the ukulele lessons one afternoon a week.
Justine would like to thank all the parents, children and staff who have made her last 5 ½ years at Coroglen School so enjoyable. She leaves us to have more time to focus on her family business. We wish her well with the family business and are thrilled our children are still able to benefit from her musical talent.

Rest In Peace Comet
Sadly we lost our precious school cool cat Comet during the school holidays. Comet was a part of the school for approximately 17 years, and brought a lot of warmth and delight to many children.

Please enjoy this special story about Comet by Sashka Highway.

Comet is special. She was not just a cat. She was a member of the school family. She was old and she had lots of stories in her. She had a special personality. She used to steal food. She was a tough cat. She always molted on my desk. Once she caught a mouse and brought it in. She started playing with in and let it go. We all screamed.

Cool cat Comet
Oh watch out for that Comet
Meat eater Comet
Watch out rabbits
Excellent cat Comet
Try and get that Comet
We love Comet

Sushi Orders need to be in on Fridays for the following Tuesdays

New Zealand Shakeout
We will be participating in New Zealand ShakeOut – a national earthquake drill taking place on Wednesday 15th October. This is a chance for our children to practise the right actin to take during an earthquake – drop, Cover and Hold.

Museum & Heritage Walk
Please keep Wednesday 29th July free as we are planning to go to the museum in town as part of our intergrated unit Our Place Our Stories. Part of this is visiting the HMS Buffalo to commemorate 175 years since it was shipwrecked in Mercury Bay. A special newsletter will come home at the end of the week once we have confirmed the details.

On 28th July, 1840 the Buffalo was carrying a cargo of kauri bound for England when it lost steerage in an easterly storm and was driven ashore to save lives, just off the beach which now bears its name. Two crew members died and further deaths were prevented by the quick actions of Captain James Wood, crew and local Maori. Some crew members stayed on and settled in New Zealand.

We had a fantastic day on Monday when Jane Ford who is the Community Trainer for Red Cross in the Bay of Plenty Region visited our senior class to teach them some of the basics in first aid training. Our senior children now have knowledge of first response including how to call for help, respond to broken bones, poisons, burns and scalds. They each received certificates of participation at the end of the day.

Our Local History
We are going to be looking at our local history and family histories beginning on Wednesday 22nd July. To start this school wise study we have a visitor who will tell us about local history. This study incorporates modern technology and inclusive practices with the values that make up our school vision which are Curiosity, Creativity, Consideration and Confidence. If anyone would like to share stories from your own childhood or school days (not necessarily Coroglen) or family history, please come along and join in from 9am to 10.15am in the school library.
