Newsletter, Term 3, Wk 6

Hello / Kia Ora

The Bays Best
This is for the senior children only. Could everyone please meet at Whitianga Town Hall by 5.15pm this Saturday 29th August for a sound check, this should be finished by 5.50pm if everything goes to plan.
We are the third act performing. We will then meet outside the Town Hall by 6.35pm to prepare for the performance.
Parents are welcome to wait in the supper room while your child performs, however if you would like to watch them performing, you will need to buy a ticket from
 Whitianga Paper Plus for $10.
Once again THANK YOU to parents for all your support over the last few weeks.
– Justine & Jenny

Pet Day
Pet Day is only four weeks away now.
Jacinta O’Donahue has kindly offered to co-ordinate this event. She needs the help and support of all the school families to ensure this is yet again a successful day. A meeting will be held at school next Tuesday at 12 o’clock(ish- after the music performance) for everyone who would like to help with Pet Day.

We have started collecting grocery items for the Grocery Hamper which is raffled off at Pet Day. Each year we ask parents to send along at least one non-perishable grocery item.

Please fill in the form at the end of this newsletter to indicate what type of pet your child/ren will be bringing to pet day (do include pre-schoolers). We will then be able to order ribbons and prizes.

Newsletter, Term 3, Wk 5

Hello / Kia Ora

Our Stories Sharing Day
Thank you to all the parents who came to see the students’ presentations at our sharing afternoon last Thursday about Our Place and the history of our area. This was particularly poignant with the 175th anniversary sinking of the Buffalo.

In the next week, the children will be making harekeke bowls and fish to complete Our Places learning.

The Bays Best
This is for the senior children only. Rehearsals will be held in the Town Hall this Saturday 22nd August from 2pm – 2.45pm. Please meet outside the Town Hall at 1.45pm - Justine

Pet Day
Your child should now be thinking about getting their pet animals organised. Agrisea have generously sent us bottles of Animal Health Tonic which are fantastic to give your calf or lamb a healthy start. If you would like to have a bottle, they can be collected from the school.

Rotorua Camp
As we have only had one response about our request for the level of interest in the senior room camp to Rotorua, it is unlikely we will go ahead this year unless the slip at the end of this newsletter is returned by this Friday. If we do not have a good response we are looking at postponing this trip till next year to give parents time to save up for camp fees.

 Phone Tree List
We have attached an updated phone tree list. Please let the school know if you have changed any of the contact details. This phone tree list is used when we need to get a message out to families. Please remember to ring the person under your contact name and pass on the message. This saves one person spending hours on the phone ringing everyone on the list.

Briar Ward from Project Energize taught the children in the junior room Poi Toa yesterday. Maori use to play Poi Toa to help increase their hand eye co-ordination skills and also to strengthen their wrists in preparation for battle.

Give-a-little for Kyla Ngarimu
Ex Coroglen School pupil Kyla Ngarimu was rushed to hospital on the 12th of August. She has been diagnosed with a form of teenage cancer. Currently she is responding well to treatment but it is going to be a long haul. With one or both parents at her bedside at all times work is going to be a struggle and the bills will not stop coming!!

Her mum Kelly is a teacher at Coromandel Area School and has also worked at Coroglen, Whenuakite and MBAS. She is great with her pupils and they all love her (ask your kids they will know her). She has also done BOT work and fundraising work in the community. Her dad Pete works at TLC, is a keen hunter and has helped a lot in the local community. He is well known by everyone as a friendly face.

If you would like to donate please go to www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ngarimukrivan
PLEASE do not post this on Whiti chitchat or Whiti buy sell swap as Kyla is a member and Kelly & Pete don’t want her to see it on Facebook.

We all hope Kyla starts to feel better and the treatment speeds up her recovery.

Newsletter Term 3, Wk 4

Hello / Kia Ora

Our Stories Sharing Day Thursday 1.30pm
We would like to invite all parents and community members to come and see the students’ presentations as a culmination of our three week integrated unit looking at our local history tomorrow afternoon. Our presentation starts at 1.30pm in the school library.

Fundraising Committee
The Fundraising Committee are holding a meeting tomorrow (Thursday 13th Aug) in the school library at 3pm to discuss the Bridge Holdup on the Friday before the Scallop Festival. This is a great fundraiser for school, and as some of our regular volunteers are no longer with us as their children are now in Mercury Bay, we will need more volunteers.

Coroglen Tavern Donation Box
The Coroglen Tavern dropped off the money collected in the school donation box last week. The children had fun counting this out, and are thrilled to announce we received $301 thanks to the generosity of our community. BIG thanks to the Coroglen Tavern for letting us keep the donation box on the bar.

The Bays Best

There is NO rehearsal this Sunday for the senior children in The Bays Best event. Rehearsals will be held in the Town Hall on Saturday 22nd August from 2pm – 2.45pm. Please meet outside the Town Hall at 1.45pm. We also need the performers contact forms returned this week- Justine

Cross Country
Once again our children shone. They were supportive and all ran their very best. Mr Marsden commented in the wrap up about how strong we all looked and how our children all support each other.
We will have a group representing us at the next event at the Waterways in Whitianga on Wednesday 26th August. Congratulations to the following children who qualified: Jerome Melde, Moana Manukau, Christina Olivett, Tyrese Melde, Sashka Highway, Riley-Jean Macdonald, Sophia-Marie Barakat Adlam, Oliver Highway, Leon Melde, Awa Illingworth, Whenua Manukau. These people will receive a special newsletter when we get more information.

Coroglen Playgroup
Due to low numbers the Coroglen Playgroup will wind down for the moment. The school has plans for the Gum town room.

Pet Day
Pet Day is now Saturday 26th September…. Please save this date! Your child should now be thinking about getting their pet animals organised. Agrisea have generously sent us bottles of Animal Health Tonic which are fantastic to give your calf or lamb a healthy start. If you would like to have a bottle, they can be collected from the school.

Rotorua Camp
We need to book this camp and need to gauge interest in parents wishing to attend. As previously published in Term 2 on 26th May (see below) this will cost just over $300 per child. We are asking you to return the slip at the end of this newsletter along with a $50 deposit so we have an idea of numbers attending the wonderful experience planned.

We are planning to visit Rotorua this year in November. This camp is always a fabulous week where not only are we immersed in culture and history but also adventure. Some of the planned activities are the 4WD trip into Mt Tarawera – the crater, The Luge, Whakarewarewa, Rainbow Springs, The Zorb and The Tamaki Cultural Village. This is fully catered and the accommodation is of a high standard. The projected cost is just over $300 per child. I have priced these activities and these experiences would be well over double what we are being charged to do these activities privately. Some children have ideas for private fundraising and knowing camp is coming up some families have started putting aside small amounts to make this more manageable come November. Once this is booked and costs have been finalised, families can deposit camp fees in their child’s name straight into the school bank account.

School Breakfast
Sam Toworai has started dishing up Coroglen Cool Kids Breakfast at the school and with the generosity of Countdown and the Op Shop we are now in full swing supplying breakfast three times a week to give the children a great start to the day. The local Op Shop have donated a few toasters and Countdown generously stock up the breakfast supplies and deliver them to us each week. THANK YOU COUNTDOWN AND THE OP SHOP!

Have a wonderful week

Newsletter, Term 3, Wk 3

Hello / Kia Ora

Cross Country
This will be held on Tuesday 11th August at Whenuakite School and is for the whole school. The Thames Valley Cross Country will be held in Whitianga on Wednesday 16th August for those children who qualify.
We will walk the courses first at 11am, and then the racing begins. Parents are welcome to come and support the children. Racing starts around 11.30am and finishes around 1pm.
We are training every day for this, so children will need clothing and suitable footwear for running games and training.
The children will be wearing the blue Coroglen School T-shirts which need to be washed and returned to the school after the cross country.
If you are able to provide transport to Whenuakite School please fill in the transport slip at the end of the newsletter and return to school as soon as possible so we can organise transport well in advance.

Coroglen Playgroup
For those parents who didn’t see last week’s newsletter, Coroglen Playgroup will have to close down shortly if there is no interest in anyone keeping it going. This means that all the wonderful resources and equipment purchased using Ministry funding will have to be returned. It would be such a shame to see our wonderful little playgroup end as it is also a great way for children and parents to get to know other people in the community and helps build friendships for when your child starts school. If you or anyone you know are interested in joining playgroup, please let the school know.

The Bays Best
Thank you to all the parents and children who turned up at the auditions last Saturday.
It sounds like we have made it through, so if parents could please keep Saturday 15th August free for rehearsals would be wonderful. Justine is trying to get our rehearsal time for the afternoon and will confirm date and time when they have been in touch.

BOT Meeting
Our next MOT meeting is on Tuesday 25th August in the staff room at 3.15pm. All are welcome.

Mathletics
The Year 1 & 2 children have expressed an interest to do Mathletics at home. If you would like to know more about Mathletics or get Jenny to set your child up with an account accessible from home, please ring Jenny at the school. The cost is $22 per child.
