Newsletter, Term 2, Wk 4

Hello / Kia Ora

120 years of Schooling at Coroglen
Thank you to everyone who came along on Friday to celebrate with us 120 years of schooling at Coroglen. Thank you to The Coroglen Tavern for donating the wonderful birthday cake pictured above and the fund-raising group for doing the sausage sizzle.

Coroglen School children celebrate 120 years of schooling with a dress up day and fun games afternoon.

Team building skills during Island-to-island.

Made it to the island.

Riley-Jean is ready to lead her team in the “egg-and spoon race.”

Elections
There has been a mix up with the final day of voting. Some people have been told the final day is on Friday 27th May, and some have been told it is today. We have decided to extend it to 12 noon Friday 27th May for those who have been told this. Please return your voting papers to school asap.

Donations for Fijian Schools
Thank you to Kale Webster for donating books and toys to go to remote Fijian schools. The plastic container will be at the school until it is full.

Assembly moves back to Friday
As swimming has ended, we have decided to move assembly back to Friday afternoons from 2.30pm. This is our opportunity to share with parents.

New Time Table
We have also decided to trial a new time table where the children will get two 40 minute breaks during the day. The amount of classroom and break time remains unaltered but will be reorganised to two 40 minute recess periods. This is because most children are eating a substantial amount at morning play time and will give them time to also run around and play. New morning tea break will start at 10.40am to 11.20am. Lunch break will be from 12.50pm to 1.30pm.

Water Leak
Ross from Eco Plumbing has identified a leak in the water line which is the likely cause of ongoing problems with our water pump. We are currently working on locating the leak, hence the hole beside the driveway.

Continuing Care Visit
The senior room children will be entertaining the residents at Continuing Care on Monday 13th June at 11am.  A transport slip will come home in next week’s newsletter if you are able to provide transport. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to perform to an audience and the residents at Continuing Care thoroughly enjoy our visits.

Fund Raising meeting
A brief meeting was held with a couple of the Fund-raising team last night to look at the draft policy (which is attached to this newsletter) and brain storm events and projects. Your feedback on the draft policy is invited.

Elgrego
Thank you to the parents who helped provide transport and extra car booster seats last week to get our children to Whenuakite School to hear Elgrego’s anti-bullying message as well as watch his magic act. Our very own Valo assisted Elgrego in one of his acts as pictured below.

Do you know how Elgrego was able to levitate and float unaided?  The adults in the audience were most impressed as well as the children.

Many thanks too, to Mr Marsden and Whenuakite School for inviting us to the performance.

Welcome back to Sashka and Oliver Highway, who returned to Coroglen today. It’s lovely to have you both back.

Have a good week, from Jean and the team…

Coroglen School Fundraising Team Policy – DRAFT

Rationale: The Fundraising Team has an important role in raising money that will benefit the school and its children, and can serve the school community by arranging events that encourage unity and harmony.

Purposes:
1.      To organise fundraising which will supplement the school’s operational bulk grant. This will allow the purchase of specific items of equipment resources or services.
2.      To organise activities in such a way that social or financial returns reflect the time committed by the members, i.e. the activities embarked upon should be cost effective.
3.      To foster goodwill by organising social events which bring the school and community together.

Guidelines:
1.      The committee will set a calendar of events with their fundraising targets each February, and will meet regularly throughout the year. The annual general meeting should take place before the end of August.
2.      The election of officers and committee members will be at the AGM. The office holders will be elected by the committee, to consist of Chairperson, Secretary/Treasurer.
3.      A BOT member will attend each Fundraising Team meeting. This liaison will allow the committee and the trustees to work with a common purpose. The BOT member will also act as liaison with staff.
4.      Meetings are to follow parliamentary guidelines with the keeping of accurate minutes, correspondence, treasurer’s report and general business.
5.      The Fundraising Team will consult and seek approval from the BOT for each year’s proposed fundraising ventures.
6.      Internal controls of finance should be established to ensure that any errors or irregularities are discovered quickly. These controls will include
a.       The operation of cashbook accounting system.
b.      Two signatures to be required on every check. Only the chairperson and secretary/treasurer to have signing authority.
c.       Accounts payable being approved at meetings before payment. Cheques must be written out before the second signature is added.
d.      Receipts being presented for reimbursement.
e.       A treasurer’s report being present at each meeting.
7.       The committee working account should hold not more than $1,000. Sums in excess of this should be passed to the school. The school shall keep records which will accurately show all sums received from the fundraising committee and all items on which that money has been spent.
8.      The Fundraising Team will provide the BOT annually with a statement of audited accounts.
9.      A report on each fundraising event is to be made to the school community
10.  Any sponsors will be thanked and promoted.

Hello / Kia Ora

120 years of Schooling at Coroglen
We will be celebrating the school’s 120th Birthday this Friday 20th May from 1.30pm.
The teachers will be dressing up in different era costumes and the children are most welcome to do the same.
The fun sports afternoon starts at 1.30pm. We will also have the BBQ sparked up with sausages and the fundraising committee will be organising the birthday cake.
There are more planned events throughout the year to celebrate 120 years of schooling at Coroglen.

School Photos
Following a parent request, this year we decided to return to one whole school photo instead of the separate classes. Many families have children in both rooms and the staff work in both also. We hope this does not inconvenience others.

Elections
The election voting forms were posted out over the weekend, so please expect them to arrive in your letter boxes from today onwards. The election closes on Friday 27th May at noon. Please take the time to read the candidate statements and vote for up to five nominees.
You can only vote using the special coloured voting forms, no duplicates, faxes or emails will be accepted.

Speed Camera
The speed camera will be situated outside the school once again. This is monitored by TCDC and is done twice a year. TCDC have had no issues in the past with the findings from these results.

Donations for Fijian Schools
Mrs Lee has brought a couple of big plastic containers to fill with any books, stationery, art supplies and  games to go to remote Fijian schools who have lost or damaged school supplies from the recent cyclone. It is a good time to clean out the rooms for a good cause.

Fundraising Committee Meeting
Next Tuesday 24th May after school in the library. All welcome.

Asthma management
If your child has moderate to severe Asthma we need to have a management plan in place at school. The Public Health Nurse can help us with this. If you feel your child is in this category please get in touch to arrange a time.

New Water Tank Upgrade
The new water tank upgrade was completed last week. A big THANK YOU to Sonny Browne who donated his time and equipment, to prepare the site for the new tank.

New Principal’s appointment
We have started the process for the principal’s appointment. This will however be a long process as we want to get this right. We value your input as well, so will be asking about your vision for the school and the attributes and qualities you would like to see in our new principal to drive this vision. We will, as well be asking our children and the local community. This Friday will be a good opportunity to speak to our board members and teachers, and share your ideas. Thanks to the parents who completed the survey and to Michelle for compiling the results. A summary is included below.

 Parent Survey Summary

Information for parents and carers:
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s survey. On behalf on the Board of Trustees and Teachers of Coroglen School we appreciate and value your input. It’s important that you as parents and caregivers are informed with how the school is progressing and are involved in the decisions made that affect the environment in which your child is learning.

On a whole we are very pleased with your responses with the majority of answers in the positive Agree / Highly Agree region, although that doesn’t mean there’s not room for improvement. The lowest Middle / Disagree region was based around school involvement and input into important school decisions.

As you know we have a very significant year ahead of us with the Board of Trustees going to elections and the all-important process of obtaining a new Principal after 18 years. This is where you as part of the Coroglen School Community can be involved.

Voting papers and profiles for Board of Trustee nominees have been sent out. Please take the time to consider and vote for who you believe will be a beneficial strength to our school.
We will also be asking about your vision for the school and what characteristics and values you would like to see in our new Principal.
These choices are fundamental in keeping our school present, dynamic and robust, and your contribution is important.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” — Nelson Mandela

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Have a good week, from Jean and the team…

Newsletter, Term 2, Wk 2

Hello / Kia Ora
Thanks to parents who helped last Wednesday on our beach/foreshore study at Kuaotunu Beach. We had a great day at the beach and the trip has inspired our children in their recount writing, reports & art work which is on-going.

Elgrego
Elgrego will be at Whenuakite School next Wednesday the 18th May to present his show in from 1.40pm to both schools. We will need transport to Whenuakite School leaving Coroglen at 1.15pm. There is limited space and unfortunately no room for pre-schoolers. Gold coin donation please. Elgrego is a Magician with an anti-bullying message.

Skipping
Our children are skipping every morning and improving their fitness. Suitable shoes are needed for this and winter sports training.

120 years of Schooling at Coroglen
Don’t forget the school’s birthday is next Friday 20th May from 1.30pm. We will be having a fun sports afternoon which is open to the community. We will have more planned events throughout the year to celebrate 120 years of schooling at Coroglen. We are also planning a tribute to Miss Anderson of course, in recognition of her years of service to Coroglen School. I am sure many of you will wish to personally voice your thanks to her.

BOT meeting
Next BOT meeting is on Tuesday 17th May at 3.30pm. All nominees and others are welcome to come to this meeting to see what is involved in being on the BOT.

Elections
Voting papers will be sent out at the end of the week. Please let the school know if you have not received them by next Tuesday.

Fundraiser for Coroglen School
Thank you to all the people who brought raffle tickets for the Mothers’ Day basket. This fundraiser made $140 for our school. Raffle winner was Kylie Willigers.

Measles
The Waikato DHB has concerns about the number of measles cases occurring in the Waikato region.
They have sent information to all schools and a summary is attached to this newsletter. They are advising us to gather updated information about who has been vaccinated (MMR) but they want parents to provide verification of vaccination. This is a big job so at this stage we are just advising parents to have this information handy if it is required.

Tummy Bug
There is also a few children coming down with a tummy bug. Be aware if they are feeling nauseous or generally poorly – it can come on quite suddenly and violently!

Yummy Sticker Sheets
We have attached the yummy sticker collection sheets for those families who do not have one.
