Gumtown Gallop

Last Friday night Coroglen Cool Kids galloped back to the past to see how life in Coroglen was.
The junior room children perform their Taniwha song while the Coroglen Cool Kids were visiting the 80s.

Bridge Hold Up
Thank you to our parents who rocked up last Friday afternoon at the Coroglen Bridge to hold up all the Scallop Festival goers and a few locals. Their efforts raised a whopping $2,260.30 for the school. Thank you very much. This money will be used to help fund our technology and music up-grades.

Concert Performance
We have only one week to go! So please help your child learn their speaking parts (they all have scripts). We will be having a dress rehearsal on Thursday afternoon from 1.30pm, and it would be great to have everyone here. If you can help with costumes, please let us know.
The Concert Performance and farewell for Miss Anderson is on Friday 23rd September and will begin at 6.30pm. (Please be there by 6.10pm at the latest.) The performance will be followed by supper –please bring a plate of finger food to share,

Pet Day

We would like to have a meeting this Thursday to sort out Pet Day jobs. To ensure Pet Day runs smoothly we will need at least six volunteers to help run the stalls and activities planned. Meeting is in the library at 3.15pm. See you there J

Pet Projects
Children’s writing that has been completed at school will come home next week for them to add to over the holidays. The diaries/projects will be due back at school by Wednesday 12th October so they can be handed to the judges.

It will be helpful if you could let us know by the end of the week what animals are coming to Pet Day, so that we can organise enough judges and ribbons. Some of the categories and/or age groups may change depending on the number of entries.

Peninsula Cross Country
Well done to all of our children who competed in the Peninsula Cross Country last Wednesday. Special congratulations to Moana Manukau who came 2nd in her race, and Whenua Manukau who was also well placed coming 11th.

Our school is looking fantastic. Another huge thanks to Lloyd and Trinity McQueen for moving the rest of the mulch! This has been an ongoing chore by the McQueen family. Thank you.

Ice Skate Tour
Once again the Mercury Bay Fishing Club is hosting Ice Skating in Whitianga over the school holidays. Kids are only $7 including ice skates.
Sunday 25th Sept – Tuesday 27th Sept 10am-5pm
Wednesday 28th Sept 10am-8pm
Thursday 29th Sept 10am-5pm

Blissing Out on Bliss Balls
Thanks to Sheree, Kerryn and team for sharing a healthy treat with the Juniors last Friday. Most of the children enjoyed rolling and trying the Bliss Balls. They were all given the recipe if you want to try them at home.

Have a good week,
from Jean and the team.

Paid Union Meeting
There is a paid union meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th September.
We will still be open and Mrs. Lee will be here.
As nearly all the teachers from the surrounding schools will be attending the meeting, MBAS and Whenuakite are closing early and so the MBAS school bus will be running earlier.
If your child usually catches the Mercury Bay bus from Mill Creek Road, they will need to be collected. Our bus will be leaving school at 3.10pm as usual. Rice will do the Mill Creek Road run.

Bridge Hold Up
Thank you to all the parents who have put their hand up to help with the Bridge Hold-Up this Friday afternoon. This is an amazing fundraiser for our school which requires only a few hours work.

Concert Performance
The children have been working hard learning lines, songs and dances for the concert performance in the last week of term. Time is getting tight, so it would be great to have everyone here for rehearsals, unless absolutely necessary. If you can help your child learn their speaking parts (they all have scripts) or can help with costumes, please let us know.

Pet Projects
Most children who are rearing a lamb or calf for pet day now have their animals, but it is not too late! Information about our expectations for pet diaries or projects is coming home with this newsletter. The juniors have been writing about their pets at school and we can send home copies of their work to be added to over the holidays.

It will be helpful if you could let us know by the end of term what animals are coming to Pet Day, so that we can organise judges.

The Board of Trustees met last night. We are nearing the end of our training with Rob Naumann the statutory advisor working with the board. Our student achievement data now shows that most of our students are working at or above expectation in reading, writing and mathematics.  A few are just below but all have made progress and have the potential to meet the standard by the end of the year.
The next BOT meeting will be Monday 17 October, 3.30pm in the school library.

Scooters at School
A number of children have brought their scooters to school this week and we have been impressed with the sharing, co-operation and self-management that has been shown around their use. Please remember that they are not able to be transported on the bus for safety reasons. Similarly if you require your child to wear a helmet when using a scooter: send it with them and we will remind them to wear them.

Cell phones in School
We have had a few children bringing cell phones to school. It is school policy that if you require your child to have a cell phone at school, that it remains switched off and in their bag during the day. (If you prefer they may be kept in the office during the day.) Being in a rural area we acknowledge that children may need a phone for emergency situations, changes to travel plans etc. We do not accept responsibility for loss or damage to any expensive items children choose to bring to school.
Please inform staff if your child has a phone and discuss these conditions with your child so that they are not getting mixed messages.
We will also be sending home our up-dated policy on cyber-safety and the agreement that needs to be signed by parents and children.

The Mystery of the Bike
This bike appeared at school over a week ago. Does anyone know who owns it? We are worried that the owner may have met with misfortune.

Have a good week,
from Jean and the team.

Daffodil Day
Our school was bright with shades of yellow, orange and green on Friday to help raise money for cancer research. Our little school raised $63.80 which Jenny took to the New World Daffodil Day collection along with a poster of the children and daffodils they had made. We would like to thank parents for their support.

Thank you Lloyd and Stella McQueen who are halfway through clearing the mulch from the front of the school. We are still looking for any other parents who can help move the pile.

Paid Union Meeting
There is a paid union meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th September.
As nearly all the teachers from the surrounding schools will be attending the meeting, MBAS and Whenuakite are closing early and so the school bus will be running earlier.
If your child needs to go on the bus, the bus will be leaving school at 1.15pm. We will still be open and Mrs. Lee will be here, so you may prefer to collect your child/ren from the school at 3pm.

AgriSea
Once again AgriSea New Zealand has sent our school 250ml bottles of AgriSea Animal Health Tonic nutritional supplement. This tonic will help your animal gain weight, improve rumen development, have a shiny coat and be in all round top condition. If you need a bottle, please ask your teacher.

Thames Valley Cross Country
Details have been sent home to the children who are part of the Peninsula Team. We wish you all luck next Wednesday.

Our children are still running through New Zealand and have now passed Ashburton, a total distance of 1179kms.

Dotterels – Student Report
Last Thursday all the children were greeted by Nicky from Department of Conservation, who was speaking about the reducing numbers of dotterels and what we can do to help their survival.
One of the ways is to make sure your dog is on a leash while you are at the beach.
Nicky was surprised by the interesting questions the children asked.
How long do they live for – the oldest dotterel on record is 36 years, but the normal age is 20 years.
What do you do if you see a baby dotterel without a mother – walk away and ring DoC if a parent dotterel doesn’t return.
How big can they grow – about the same size of an oyster catcher.
How many eggs do they lay - dotterels normally lay 3 eggs in their nest, but sometimes there is only two, or four.
Our children are working on individual posters.  One from each room will be picked to be displayed on a Coromandel beach.

Book Club
Please get your orders in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment if they have sold out.

Speed Trailer
The speed trailer will be outside our school for the rest of the week. This is to help promote awareness to drivers of their speed as they are passing our little school.

Have a good week,
from Jean and the team.
