Newsletter, Term 1, Week 1

Hello and Kia ora tatou.

Welcome to the start of the school year for 2017.
We are very pleased to welcome new five year olds: Dakota Corcoran,  Alexis Whitford and Farai Gray; 7 year old Bodhi Cavell, who is in Year 4 and our new teacher: Ms. Ischelle Stevenson. Whaea Shelley is working in the Rangihau room with groups from Year1 to Year 4 and presently sharing her skills as a swim coach with all the students. Jenny and I will also be working with students during our literacy and numeracy blocks in the morning enabling a more even spread of class numbers and better student teacher ratio for these core subject areas.

Whaea Shelley with Dakota, Farai and Bohdi.

We farewell Heather, Fiona and Kevin Cocker, who are returning to Tomarata. Thank you Fiona for your contributions to the BoT and best wishes to you all for the future. We also farewell Mordechai Nathan who has been our teacher aide for the past two years. Thank you Mordechai for your work in the classroom and best wishes for your future.

We have been busy during the break, working to get the classrooms and grounds ready for the new term. We now have all new water lines and a
new septic system in place. The January water samples came back showing our water is again safe to drink. Many thanks to Jessie Lockhart, Ross Lewis and Antony Yeomans especially, who have worked many hours to ensure we were ready for the start of term.

These first few days we are spending getting used to our new time-table and learning spaces; establishing routines and expectations; and hopefully having a bit of fun as we ease into the term. It is hot – remember to slip, slop, slap and sip! Keep in the shade and keep hydrated.

Next Friday the 10th February, we would like to invite all of our friends and families to a BBQ after school. The pool will be open (please supervise your own children) and we can wheel out the BBQ for a bit of early supper. This will be a chance to catch up, meet new people and find out a bit more about the changes at school and plans for the year.

School Swimming Pool
The pool is now open. All children are expected to swim every day. Please make sure they bring their named swimwear and towels to school. A tog bag is handy to bring as well so they keep any wet gear separate from their school books. If children can’t take part in swimming, they will need to bring a note from home excusing them.

Country Swimming Sports Y4-Y8
Country Swimming Sports is on Wednesday 22nd February at MBAS. More details will come home as we get closer to the date.

We have attached an updated pub lunch list.
Please write their orders on an envelope with the amount of money enclosed. These need to be handed into the staff room before school.

Lucky Book Club
We have also attached the first Lucky Book Club catalogue for this year. Orders need to be at the school by next Wednesday 8th February so we can get them  sent off early so as not to disappoint anyone ordering a popular book.

Overdue Library Books
There are still quite a few library books overdue from last year. Could these please be returned asap.

Phone Tree list
An updated phone tree list is also attached. Please let us know if any contact numbers have changed. These numbers will be used to send group text messages to parents advising you of any school related issues.
Have a good week, from Jean and the team.
